JSW MG Motor India has recently unveiled its plans to enter the luxury car market with a new initiative called ‘MG Select.’ The company aims to offer an accessible luxury experience to its customers, thereby creating a niche market that caters to the mass consumer base. Gaurav Gupta, the Chief Growth Officer of JSW MG Motor India, emphasized that the company’s strategy of “accessible luxury” encompasses not only competitive pricing but also a comprehensive ownership experience.
He stated, “Our approach is not solely about the price point; it includes the entire package. Just as we introduced battery-as-a-service (BaaS) in our Windsor electric vehicle, we intend to provide an all-encompassing ownership package that focuses on an individualized, curated, and exclusive experience. This initiative will enable us to redefine what luxury means in the automotive sector. Our goal is to set a new standard within the luxury market.”
The company plans to launch its first luxury vehicle in the first quarter of 2025, with an additional model expected within the same year. Over the next two years, MG Motor aims to introduce four more vehicles, which will include sedans—currently absent from their lineup. Gupta mentioned that these new offerings will focus on new energy vehicles (NEVs), incorporating plug-in hybrids, fully electric models, and conventional hybrids, with various body styles such as SUVs and sedans.
In its inaugural year, MG Motor intends to target twelve cities to establish standalone luxury centers, with plans for further expansion in the future. With the introduction of MG Select, the company is strategically leveraging its existing customer base while providing consumers with enhanced choices in the rapidly evolving market for new-age automobiles. Gupta explained, “This initiative is designed to cater to the modern Indian consumer who seeks a personalized, curated, and exclusive luxury experience. MG Select is positioned to meet these demands effectively.”
In addition to discussing luxury vehicles, Gupta also addressed the topic of electric vehicles (EVs). He noted that the government has played a supportive role, particularly concerning taxation and certain state governments waiving local registration fees. He highlighted the significance of the battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.
Gupta explained, “BaaS is a critical innovation aimed at reducing the overall cost of acquisition for EVs. While the prices of lithium and other components are decreasing, there remains a significant gap. By introducing battery-as-a-service, we are effectively aligning the costs of internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles, thereby reducing both running costs and acquisition costs.”
The company has already implemented BaaS in its Windsor model, and it has now been extended to other vehicles, including the Comet and ZS EV. The pricing for these models starts at ₹4.99 lakh for the Comet, with a battery rental fee of ₹2.5 per kilometer, while the MG ZS EV begins at ₹13.99 lakh with a rental cost of ₹4.5 per kilometer. Additionally, MG offers a buyback guarantee of 60% after three years for all its vehicles, providing further incentive for customers to consider transitioning to electric vehicles.
JSW MG Motor India is a leading automotive manufacturer committed to delivering innovative vehicles that blend luxury with accessibility. With a focus on new energy vehicles, including electric and hybrid models, the company aims to redefine the luxury car segment. Through initiatives like ‘MG Select’ and battery-as-a-service, JSW MG Motor India enhances the customer ownership experience while promoting sustainable mobility.
