JSW Energy announced on Thursday that it has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company to establish a 1,600 MW thermal power project in the state. Additionally, the company has received a commercial operation date (CoD) certificate for Unit 2 of the 2X350MW Utkal thermal power plant, as stated in a filing.

The signed PPA covers the development of a 1,600 MW (2 x 800 MW) super/ultra-super critical thermal power plant, set to be built as a greenfield project in Salboni, West Bengal. The plant is expected to be operational within the next five years.

The 25-year PPA for the full 1,600 MW capacity has been secured, and the plant will use domestic coal allocated to West Bengal under the SHAKTI B policy. The earlier-than-expected commissioning of Unit-2 of the Utkal Thermal Power Plant is key to meeting the rising base load demand, particularly during high-demand periods. The Utkal plant operates with domestic coal, supplying power to both the merchant market and bilateral contracts.

Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, commented, “This is the largest greenfield capacity and the biggest PPA we’ve signed. This project will significantly enhance local employment, support regional economic growth, and ensure a steady and reliable power supply for the future.”
