JSW Thermal Energy Two Limited, a subsidiary of JSW Energy Ltd, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited for a greenfield 1,600 MW (2 × 800 MW) super/ultra-supercritical thermal power project at Salboni, West Bengal. The project was awarded through a competitive bidding process and is expected to be commissioned within six years.
This marks the second thermal PPA signed by JSW Energy with WBSEDCL for the Salboni site, following an earlier 1,600 MW agreement executed in March 2025. With this signing, total planned capacity at Salboni increases to 3,200 MW, making it the company’s largest single-location thermal asset.
The plant will use domestic coal allocated to West Bengal under the SHAKTI B (iv) policy. According to the company, proximity to coal sources and operational synergies with the existing project under construction are expected to support efficiency and cost optimization.
JSW Energy currently operates 5,658 MW of thermal capacity. With 3,200 MW under construction at Salboni and a potential addition of 1,800 MW at KSK Mahanadi, total thermal capacity is projected to reach 10,658 MW, entirely based on domestic coal.
Overall, JSW Energy has locked-in generation capacity of 32.1 GW, including operational, under-construction, and pipeline assets, along with 29.4 GWh of energy storage capacity. The company targets 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of storage by 2030, with a long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
