JSW Energy Limited has successfully brought online the second 80 MW unit of its 240 MW (3 x 80 MW) Kutehr Hydroelectric Power Plant located in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh. With this milestone, the plant’s operational capacity now stands at 160 MW. Power supply from this capacity has already started flowing to the state of Haryana.
The final 80 MW unit of the Kutehr project is expected to be operational shortly. Once fully functional, the project will deliver its entire 240 MW output under a 35-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) at a levelized ceiling tariff of ₹4.50 per unit. The electricity will be distributed through Uttar Haryana BijliVitran Nigam and Dakshin Haryana BijliVitran Nigam.
Noted for its swift execution, Kutehr is among the fastest-developed greenfield hydropower projects in the country. The commissioning comes at a strategically beneficial time, allowing the company to leverage strong water inflows during the monsoon-driven peak generation period.
With this development, JSW Energy’s installed hydro capacity has reached 1,551 MW. Combined with 2,157 MW from solar and 3,562 MW from wind, the company’s renewable energy portfolio now accounts for 56% of its total installed capacity.
Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, stated, “The timely commissioning of the second unit at Kutehr is a testament to our project execution strength. We look forward to bringing the final unit online soon, which will further reinforce our commitment to reliable and clean energy supply.”
JSW Energy currently has 30.3 GW of total locked-in capacity, which includes 12.9 GW of operational assets and 12.8 GW under development across both renewable and thermal segments. Additionally, the company has secured 29.4 GWh of energy storage capacity — including 26.4 GWh from pumped hydro projects and 3.0 GWh from battery-based systems. It aims to achieve 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage by FY2030, while targeting carbon neutrality by 2050.
Part of the USD 23 billion JSW Group, JSW Energy is one of India’s leading private sector power producers. Since launching operations in 2000 with a 2×130 MW thermal plant in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, the company has expanded its capacity to 12.9 GW, covering a broad range of fuel types and geographies. With interests in power generation and transmission, JSW Energy is focused on sustainable expansion, sound governance, and long-term value creation for its stakeholders.
