Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) has entered into an agreement to acquire Alloy Enterprises, a Boston-based technology company developing advanced thermal management solutions for high-performance data centers and other mission-critical industrial environments. The acquisition is expected to enhance Johnson Controls’ capabilities in data center cooling technologies, a sector experiencing rapid growth as demand for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to expand.
Alloy Enterprises, founded in 2020, specializes in thermal, mechanical and materials science innovations. The company has developed a proprietary platform featuring advanced direct liquid cooling components designed to improve thermal performance in modern data centers.
According to the company, its cooling technology can deliver up to a 35 percent improvement in thermal management efficiency compared with conventional approaches. The platform is also designed to reduce pressure drop within cooling systems by up to 75 percent, enabling coolant to circulate more efficiently and lowering overall energy consumption.
Efficient thermal management has become a critical priority for data center operators as modern processors and high-density computing hardware generate significantly greater heat loads. Technologies that remove heat more effectively can help improve performance, reduce energy use and support more compact infrastructure designs. Johnson Controls said the acquisition will expand its portfolio of cooling technologies and reinforce its position in the data center thermal management market.
Lei Schlitz, Vice President and President of Global Products and Solutions at Johnson Controls, said the addition of Alloy Enterprises will enhance the company’s ability to address rapidly evolving computing demands. “This acquisition strengthens our technology foundation in advanced thermal management and supports our strategy of optimizing the overall cooling architecture of modern data centers,” Mr Schlitz said. “By adding Alloy’s innovations to our portfolio, we can deliver higher efficiency and increased cooling capacity while helping customers deploy infrastructure faster.”
The integration is also expected to strengthen Johnson Controls’ broader technology capabilities across multiple product lines, supporting mission-critical applications that require highly reliable and efficient cooling systems. Alloy Enterprises’ technology platform includes a proprietary manufacturing process that improves liquid cooling efficiency for components such as graphics processing units (GPUs), central processing units (CPUs), memory modules and networking interfaces. These systems are designed to address the growing heat loads generated by advanced computing systems used in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and high-performance data processing.
The company’s solutions will complement Johnson Controls’ existing portfolio of cooling technologies, which includes several recently introduced systems for large-scale data center operations. These include the YDAM magnetic bearing chiller capable of delivering approximately 3.5 megawatts of cooling capacity while offering higher capacity density compared with many competing systems. The company’s YK-HT two-stage economized centrifugal chiller is designed to deliver a wide operating range while requiring fewer supporting cooling units.
Johnson Controls also offers the Silent-Aire coolant distribution unit platform, a scalable liquid cooling system capable of supporting installations ranging from 500 kilowatts to more than 10 megawatts. In addition, the company’s YHAU absorption chillers are designed to capture waste heat and convert it into additional cooling capacity, improving efficiency compared with conventional electrically driven cooling systems.
Alison Forsyth, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Alloy Enterprises, said joining Johnson Controls will enable the company to expand the reach of its technology. “We look forward to working with Johnson Controls to address the growing challenges faced by data center operators and other mission-critical industries,” Mr Forsyth said. “Their global scale and engineering capabilities will help accelerate the adoption of our technology and extend its impact.”
The transaction is expected to close during Johnson Controls’ fiscal third quarter, subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI) shapes environments where people thrive.
