JK Tyre & Industries, one of India’s leading tyre manufacturers, has become the latest member of the global RE100 initiative, setting its sights on transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2050. With this milestone, the company is the first Indian tyre manufacturer and the 16th Indian business to commit to the RE100 pledge.
As part of its sustainability strategy, JK Tyre has outlined a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity by 50% by 2030, using fiscal year 2019 as a baseline. This target is part of the company’s broader commitment to integrating more sustainable practices into its operations while staying ahead of evolving climate regulations.
Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre, commented, “Joining RE100 is a testament to our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship. We are dedicated to energy efficiency and conservation, and we’re excited to collaborate with others leading the charge toward renewable energy adoption.”
Dr. Divya Sharma, India Executive Director of the Climate Group, highlighted the importance of JK Tyre’s decision, noting that it demonstrates how large-scale manufacturing can adopt renewable energy solutions. She expressed enthusiasm for the company’s future achievements as part of the RE100 initiative.
JK Tyre has steadily increased its renewable energy use by 2-5% annually and currently sources 40% of its energy from renewable sources. Since 2013-14, the company has cut its GHG emission intensity by 64% and has achieved significant sustainability milestones at its Indian manufacturing plants, including Zero Liquid Discharge, Zero-Waste-to-Landfill, and the elimination of single-use plastics.
The RE100 initiative, supported by the Climate Group in partnership with CDP, brings together over 400 companies worldwide that are committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity. Known for pioneering radial tire technology, JK Tyre introduced India’s first radial tire in 1977 and is now the leader in the Truck Bus Radial segment. The company offers comprehensive solutions across a range of vehicle types, from passenger and commercial vehicles to farming equipment and Off-the-Road (OTR) tires, as well as tires for two- and three-wheelers.
With a global presence spanning 105 countries and over 180 distributors, JK Tyre has built an extensive international footprint. The company operates 12 sustainable manufacturing facilities—nine in India and three in Mexico—which produce around 32 million tires annually.
Its extensive network includes more than 6,000 dealers and specialized brand outlets known as Steel Wheels, Truck Wheels, and Xpress Wheels. Through this wide-reaching distribution, JK Tyre exports to about 100 countries, supported by over 230 distributors worldwide, making it a major player in the global tire industry.
