Jindal Stainless, the Indian stainless steel producer, has recently made an announcement to generate more than 1.9 billion units of renewable electricity each year, as detailed in its latest Sustainability Report. Utilizing rooftop, floating, and wind-solar hybrid solar installations, the company aims to achieve this environmentally friendly initiative.
Jindal Stainless is associated with innovation in stainless steel with grades like IRS 350CR, ideal for the first stainless steel pedestrian bridge in India. Their R&D delivers resilient materials like EQ 317L and high-aluminum ferritic variants, enhancing infrastructure and automotive parts’ quality. With diverse product lines, including specialty offerings like coin blanks, they showcase technological prowess. Embracing a circular economy, they prioritize product stewardship for a reduced environmental footprint. Leveraging industry 4.0 and robotic processes, they boost sustainability and aim for a 50% carbon emissions cut by 2035, aligning with COP 28 climate goals.
According to the sustainability report published by Jindal Stainless, the proposed efforts hold the promise of slashing yearly carbon emissions by a remarkable 13.52 lakh tonnes. Jindal Stainless and ReNew Power have joined forces in a partnership aimed at providing a continuous supply of 100 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy. Furthermore, ongoing discussions involve the establishment of an additional 100 MW RTC renewable energy projects at the Jajpur and Hisar manufacturing units. The overarching objective revolves around ensuring that both units collectively reach a capacity of 300 MW RE-RTC.
Abhyuday Jindal, the Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, emphasized that this decision underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to ethical practices and preserving the environment. He further stated that achieving a vision of a more eco-friendly future is intricately linked to the effectiveness of renewable energy endeavors. He asserts that the company aims to elevate benchmarks within the industry, ensuring that its activities not only safeguard the environment but also contribute positively to its ecosystems through innovative research and development (R&D) efforts.
Kalyan Bhattacherjee, the Chief Sustainability Officer at Jindal Stainless, highlighted the company’s proactive stance in embracing a digital overhaul. This transformation aims to enhance data handling and monitoring through the automation of governance, social media, and environmental data. By integrating environmental consciousness into fundamental operations, they are forging a sustainability legacy that extends beyond mere business objectives.
The report reflects Jindal Stainless’ aim to sustainability, laying out objectives like achieving zero liquid discharge, promoting the utilization of recycled materials, and attaining net zero emissions by 2050. Developed in accordance with GRI standards and with the assistance of PwC, the report has undergone independent verification by TÜV SÜD South Asia Pvt. Ltd., a third-party assurance entity.
