Jindal Stainless, India’s largest producer of stainless steel, has announced the doubling of its slag processing capacity with a new wet milling plant at its Jajpur facility in Odisha. This expansion supports the company’s efforts to promote circular production by recovering valuable metals from industrial waste and conserving natural resources. It also reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and is expected to generate approximately 140 new jobs in the region.

The new plant will be developed under a 15-year partnership with Harsco Environmental, a global leader in providing innovative environmental solutions for the metals industry. With a planned investment of USD 150 million, the facility will focus on metal recovery from slag, aligning with Jindal Stainless’ circularity objectives. Over the course of the partnership, the recovered metals are expected to offset the plant’s initial investment, creating long-term environmental and economic value.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, shared, “As we continue to ramp up our production capacity to meet growing demand for stainless steel, we are deeply committed to doing so in an environmentally responsible way. Strengthening our partnership with Harsco Environmental allows us to enhance our waste management practices and drive sustainability across our operations. The new wet milling plant will help us effectively utilize slag and offer meaningful opportunities to the local communities.”

ManjunathRaghavelu, Managing Director for Harsco Environmental in India & MEA, added, “This 15-year agreement represents a significant milestone in our long-standing collaboration with Jindal Stainless. The Jajpur site will be the first in India to operate two wet milling plants, marking a key development in our shared focus on sustainability and circular economy practices. Together, we will continue to push forward the responsible use of slag in the steel industry.”

This project is integral to Jindal Stainless’ long-term Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals and its roadmap toward achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. The company has already made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint, achieving a 14% reduction in FY25 through various decarbonization initiatives. These include the establishment of India’s first green hydrogen plant for stainless steel production and the installation of the country’s largest captive solar energy facility within a single industrial campus in Odisha.
