In a significant boost to Tamil Nadu’s electronics sector, Murata Manufacturing Company, a Japanese electronics component leader, is setting up a manufacturing unit at OneHub Chennai Industrial Park to produce multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa announced the development on Wednesday, highlighting Murata’s entry as another milestone for Tamil Nadu, following major investments by Corning and Jabil.

Murata’s MLCCs are globally recognized for their technological excellence and are found in devices ranging from Apple and Samsung smartphones to Nvidia servers and Sony gaming consoles. The company’s products have even contributed to NASA’s Mars helicopter project. “This marks a crucial step in our goal to scale electronics exports tenfold to $100 billion, and we are already seeing significant results,” Rajaa stated.

Murata’s move follows comments from company President Norio Nakajima, who previously indicated that the firm was evaluating potential investments in India. Currently, nearly 60% of Murata’s MLCC production is based in Japan. Tamil Nadu has been in discussions with the company for over a year, and after multiple meetings, production in the state has now commenced.

Driven largely by Apple and its growing supply chain, Tamil Nadu has emerged as India’s largest exporter of electronics, registering a 78% year-on-year growth in FY24. The state contributed $9.56 billion to India’s total electronics exports of $29.12 billion last year and has already surpassed $6 billion in exports between April and September this year.

“For those who claim that India is only an assembly hub—witness the shift in the global supply chain. India is set to become a global hub for advanced electronics manufacturing, and Tamil Nadu will be the driving force behind this transformation,” Rajaa emphasized.

Murata plans to scale up operations fully by FY26, gaining experience in Indian factory operations before expanding further. The company’s entry signals long-term commitment and further investment opportunities in India’s growing electronics ecosystem.
