State-owned telecom equipment manufacturer ITI Ltd announced on Thursday, August 29, that it has received its first order for electronic voting machines (EVMs). The order, placed by the State Election Commission (SEC) of West Bengal, will see ITI supply 500 EVM sets after a successful demonstration in Kolkata.

The ‘multi-post EVM,’ designed and developed by ITI, was created in line with specifications finalized by the SEC and its Technical Evaluation Committee. The design has been approved by a standing committee of state election commissioners, as detailed in a stock exchange filing.

ITI will produce the EVMs at its facilities, ensuring they meet the technical standards of the Election Commission. The units will be delivered promptly, adhering to quality standards and the commitments made to the West Bengal SEC.

These versatile EVMs are suitable for local body elections, including gram panchayats, municipalities, and corporations, as well as other institutions requiring democratic elections. The machines can also function as single-post EVMs for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

Rajesh Rai, Chairman and Managing Director of ITI, expressed the company’s enthusiasm about this milestone. “ITI is thrilled to secure its first-ever order to manufacture EVMs for the State Election Commission of West Bengal. This opportunity allows us to reaffirm ITI Limited’s position as a leading technology manufacturer in India, joining the ranks of esteemed EVM producers in the country,” Rai stated.
