ITI Limited, India’s pioneering telecom public sector undertaking, is set to launch a pilot project in Uttar Pradesh focused on improving road safety through the use of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics. This initiative, in collaboration with technology partner mLogica, marks the country’s first AI-powered road safety system and aims to reduce accidents and enhance traffic enforcement.
The project will develop a scalable analytics platform capable of gathering and processing data from various sources, including traffic patterns (speed, congestion, density), environmental conditions (weather, time of day), driver behavior (violations, training history), vehicle records (registration, inspections), accident reports (causes and severity), and road infrastructure at the point of impact (lane details, intersections, signage, etc.).
Endorsed by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the project will identify root causes of road mishaps, detect accident-prone zones (black spots), and provide real-time predictions to enable preventive measures. It will also offer detailed, data-backed insights to support road safety policy reforms and infrastructure upgrades. Decision-makers will have access to a simulation tool to test cost-benefit outcomes of different safety models, alongside live dashboards to track implementation progress.
The six-week prototype phase will consolidate and analyze extensive data—from weather patterns to vehicle telematics—to build AI models capable of predicting high-risk areas and recommending immediate interventions. The pilot’s success could lead to broader deployment in key transport systems, including digitized licensing, permit issuance, e-challan systems, and vehicle databases such as Vahan and Sarathi.
Rajesh Rai, Chairman and Managing Director of ITI Limited, expressed his optimism: “We’re proud to lead this transformative initiative in Uttar Pradesh. The government’s faith in our model is a testament to ITI’s evolving role as a key enabler of digital governance. Our AI-driven platform will pave the way for smarter traffic systems and safer roads.”
He added, “This project reflects our goal to use technology for public welfare. By combining analytics with real-time decision tools, we aim to significantly cut down road accident fatalities and establish a benchmark for other states to follow.”
ITI Limited has long supported state governments in digital transformation. Notable projects include the Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra (ASSK-GP) for Gram Panchayats in Maharashtra and surveillance and GIS-based land intelligence systems in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, collectively valued at around ₹88 crore.
A key player in telecom infrastructure, ITI operates six advanced manufacturing units across India, supported by an R&D centre in Bengaluru and a nationwide project network. The company’s portfolio spans telecom products, defense equipment, smart city solutions, LED systems, fiber optics, and digital security devices. ITI is also strengthening its presence in emerging domains such as defense electronics, IoT, e-governance, and data center services.
