ITC Ltd, a leading FMCG company, has announced in its FY24 annual report that it has surpassed its goal of using 50% renewable energy ahead of schedule. The company aimed to achieve this milestone by 2030 but has already accomplished it in FY24.
ITC has committed to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. Its factories now incorporate green features, and its luxury hotels and office complexes are certified by top sustainability councils like the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
In the past fiscal year, more than 50% of ITC’s energy needs (compared to 43% last year) were met from renewable sources such as biomass, wind, and solar power, as detailed in its annual report. The company has also enhanced its environmental efforts by replacing conventional boilers with advanced High Pressure Recovery Boilers at its Bhadrachalam mill, reducing coal consumption and lowering carbon emissions by about 25%.
To bolster its renewable energy capacity, ITC has installed and activated 205 MW of solar and wind power across various locations in India. Moreover, all new and existing buildings, including hotels, manufacturing units, warehouses, and office complexes, are being equipped with green features.
Notably, 40 ITC buildings have received Platinum certification from USGBC/IGBC, with 23 hotels achieving LEED Platinum Certification and 12 hotels receiving the prestigious LEED Zero Carbon Certification, a global first. ITC’s commitment to sustainability extends to its Sankhya data center in Bengaluru, where efforts to minimize energy use and maximize efficiency are ongoing.
