In September 2024, HELLER unveiled the Tokn at the AMB trade fair, a compact yet powerful educational tool that simplifies the world of machine tools. The Tokn is both a functional machine and a training device, offering hands-on experiences with real-world manufacturing processes. Designed as a smaller version of HELLER’s larger CNC machine tools, it provides an opportunity for skilled worker training while maintaining the full capabilities of its larger counterparts.
HELLER’s journey in training began in the 1980s with the development of the CNC ProfiTrainer, the precursor to the Tokn. Over the years, this tool has provided many young people with essential NC technology knowledge at HELLER’s training facilities. The company’s HELLER Academy continues to offer comprehensive training, providing both HELLER employees and customers with hands-on experiences using advanced training systems.
To enhance the Tokn’s appeal and functionality, HELLER recently gave it a modern design update, which earned the German Design Award 2025 for ‘Excellent Product Design – Industry.’ “We created the Tokn to allow young people to directly engage with and shape the world of machine tools,” said Achim Hammley, project lead at HELLER Training. Apprentices use the Tokn to build and operate a miniature CNC machine, learning how to manufacture workpieces in the process.
The Tokn is also part of HELLER Academy’s customer training programs, helping specialists optimize their use of HELLER machinery. This innovative tool bridges the gap between education and industry, fostering collaboration between educational institutions, technology providers, and the manufacturing sector to keep training programs aligned with modern production needs.
Unlike traditional HELLER machines, the Tokn is mobile and portable, allowing it to be used directly at an operator’s workplace. Manufactured by HELLER apprentices in Nürtingen, Germany, the Tokn features real control components and utilizes Siemens’ SINUMERIK ONE CNC system, complete with an intuitive interface. This system offers unique capabilities, such as digital twins, and enables trainees to test programs and even perform actual machining tasks, just as they would on larger machines.
With a 5-axis design, the Tokn includes integrated work area lighting and a height-adjustable control panel, making it an ideal tool for training on the safe operation of machining centers. Its compact size also reduces the intimidation factor, making it easier for trainees to learn and gain confidence before working with full-scale equipment.
To showcase its capabilities, HELLER has launched the ‘Tokn on tour’ campaign, bringing the training tool to trade fairs and educational events worldwide. The Tokn will be featured at over ten events in countries including China, the USA, Poland, France, the UK, and Germany throughout 2025.
Founded in 1894 in Nürtingen, Germany, HELLER has grown from a small craft business into a global leader in CNC machine tools and manufacturing systems. With over 2,600 employees, the company operates production facilities in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, serving customers across a wide range of industries. HELLER’s product offerings include 4-axis and 5-axis machining centers, specialized machines for crankshaft and camshaft machining, and solutions for the digitalization and automation of production.
