Intelsat, a leading operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, has become one of the first foreign satellite providers to receive regulatory approval from the Government of India to deliver direct broadcast services. This significant milestone marks an important step in Intelsat’s efforts to expand its operations and investments within the Indian market.

The company has obtained authorization to operate four geostationary (GEO) satellites—IS-17, IS-20, IS-36, and IS-39—with C-band coverage over India. These satellites will primarily support the country’s rapidly evolving broadcast media sector, enhancing the delivery and distribution of content both domestically and to international audiences. This development underscores Intelsat’s strategic commitment to advancing its footprint in India and supporting the growth of its digital and broadcast infrastructure.

“This approval is a critical advancement in Intelsat’s contribution to India’s space and communications sector,” stated Gaurav Kharod, Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific at Intelsat. “With four satellites providing robust coverage across the region, Indian broadcasters will gain access to reliable and high-quality connectivity solutions aligned with their operational requirements. This authorization strengthens our ability to support India’s growing media ecosystem.”

Following clearance from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), Intelsat has secured new contracts with three of India’s largest media companies. These agreements will enable the delivery of a comprehensive range of media content to viewers throughout India.

Intelsat delivers secure, satellite-based communications solutions to commercial, government, and non-governmental organizations through its advanced global satellite network and managed services. With one of the world’s most expansive satellite fleets and connectivity infrastructures, the company supports communication across continents and oceans. Founded over six decades ago, Intelsat continues to pioneer industry advancements and remains at the forefront of satellite-enabled digital transformation.
