Informa Markets in India, the country’s leading organizer of trade exhibitions, hosted a high-level Industry Roundtable on October 15 at JW Marriott, Pune, as a curtain raiser to the 3rd edition of The Battery Show India (TBSI) 2025. The event, which will be co-located with Renewable Energy India (REI) from October 30 to November 1, 2025, at the India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida, brought together key leaders from the electric mobility and energy storage sectors.
The discussions focused on the accelerating growth of India’s EV ecosystem, advancements in battery technology, and emerging business opportunities across the value chain. Industry experts highlighted that the Indian EV battery market, valued at USD 16.77 billion in 2023, is expected to expand to USD 27.70 billion by 2028, reflecting the sector’s robust growth momentum.
Pune, a key center for automotive manufacturing and battery research, played host to insights shared by Prajyot Sathe, Research Director, Mobility – Electric Vehicles, Frost & Sullivan. “The global electric passenger car market is expected to reach about 21 million units by the end of 2025,” he said. “In comparison, India’s passenger EV market, which closed at nearly 99,000 units in 2024, is projected to grow to around 140,000 units in 2025—almost entirely battery electric. By 2030, this number could reach 700,000 units, representing 7–8% of total passenger vehicle sales.”
Mr Sathe noted that India’s EV momentum is being powered by supply chain localization, partnerships across industries, and strong technological advancements. He identified Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra as leading the domestic EV market, with international players like Tesla and VinFast adding depth to the premium segment.
Ramnik Singh, Director – India & ASEAN, Gamma Technologies, emphasized a shift toward technology-agnostic powertrain strategies globally. “While electrification remains central, the future will see a balanced mix of electric, hybrid, and range-extended vehicles,” he said. “India’s FAME and PLI programs have catalyzed EV adoption and local cell production, but the next priority should be incentivizing recycling—particularly for LFP batteries—to ensure sustainability and economic viability.”
Apoorva Bedekar, Chief Operating Officer, Cordwood Technologies LLP, called for a stronger focus on developing ‘India-first’ products. “Battery Management Systems (BMS) are becoming crucial across electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Although large-scale ESS units are still being imported in semi-knocked-down formats from China, India is rapidly building its own technology base. Local innovation suited to Indian conditions will be key to long-term self-reliance,” she said.
Kapil Baidya, Vice President, Energy in Motion, elaborated on the significance of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistry for Indian EVs. “LFP batteries offer the right balance of safety and performance for tropical climates. Spent batteries can serve another 5–10 years in stationary energy storage before recycling. With the 2022 Battery Waste Management Rules, recycling guarantees and BIS-certified imports are improving safety and resource efficiency,” he added.
Rajneesh Khattar, Senior Group Director, Informa Markets in India, highlighted that India’s Battery Management System market, valued at USD 278 million in 2024, is projected to reach USD 1.22 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 17.9%. “Through The Battery Show India, we aim to create a powerful platform that connects innovators, policymakers, and global industry leaders to accelerate India’s clean energy and battery ecosystem,” he said.
The 2025 edition of The Battery Show India, the country’s largest dedicated exhibition for batteries and energy storage, will feature over 350 exhibitors and 400 brands from Japan, the USA, Korea, Taiwan, China, and India. Supported by the Department of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the expo will showcase breakthroughs in cell manufacturing, battery materials, and energy storage systems. More than 20,000 trade visitors are expected, with a highlight being the live demonstration of Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) across multiple industrial and grid applications.
