IndiGo, India’s leading airline, announced on Friday that it has signed a preliminary agreement with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. As part of the agreement, BIAL will allocate approximately 31 acres of land to IndiGo for the development of the MRO infrastructure, which will support the airline’s growing fleet.

The new facility will be equipped to service both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, enhancing IndiGo’s maintenance capabilities and expanding its operational footprint at the Bengaluru airport. Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, commented, “The development of a comprehensive MRO facility is a strategic milestone for us. This partnership with BIAL underscores our commitment to long-term growth and the continued evolution of Bengaluru’s aviation ecosystem.”

He added, “Together, we are helping shape the future of Indian aviation, focusing on innovation, growth, and strengthening India’s position as a leader in global air connectivity.” Hari Marar, MD and CEO of BIAL, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Our long-standing relationship with IndiGo continues to grow, and this agreement further solidifies that bond. It is a testament to the growing potential of Bengaluru Airport as a top aviation hub.” Marar also acknowledged the support of the Karnataka government in making this collaboration possible, which will foster the next phase of aviation-driven development for the region.

The agreement also includes plans for broader collaboration in areas such as network expansion, infrastructure development, and joint marketing initiatives. Both parties aim to enhance aviation infrastructure and establish Bengaluru as a critical hub for both domestic and international passenger and cargo operations.

With a fleet of over 400 aircraft, IndiGo expects the MRO facility to provide a significant advantage in aircraft availability, improved cost efficiency, and quicker turnaround times, all of which will benefit the airline and its customers. Additionally, the new MRO development is expected to bolster the aerospace and defense sector in Karnataka, further contributing to the region’s growth. IndiGo already operates MRO facilities in both Delhi and Bengaluru.
