Indichip Semiconductors Ltd, in collaboration with its Japanese joint venture partner Yitoa Micro Technology (YMTL), has signed an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government to establish India’s first privately-owned semiconductor manufacturing facility. The project involves an investment of Rs 14,000 crore.
The facility will specialize in the production of Silicon Carbide (SiC) chips, contributing to advancements in technology and supporting India’s sustainability and energy efficiency goals. The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated land for the facility at the Orvakal Mega Industrial Hub in Kurnool and will provide essential infrastructure and ecosystem support to ensure the project’s success.
The SiC manufacturing unit will start with an initial production capacity of 10,000 wafers per month, scaling up to 50,000 wafers per month over the next two to three years. This initiative aligns with the Atma Nirbhar Bharat vision and addresses rising global demand for energy-efficient solutions, electric vehicles, and renewable energy technologies, according to an official statement.
The agreement was finalized in the presence of Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh and Industries Minister TG Bharat, who highlighted the state’s ability to attract high-tech industries through innovative policies and strong infrastructure. This investment underscores the region’s growing prominence in India’s semiconductor and advanced manufacturing landscape.
