The domestic renewable energy sector has significantly contributed to the expansion of the global workforce in this field, which has reached a remarkable total of 16.2 million jobs, according to a recent report. The 2024 Annual Review, published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), reveals that India’s renewable energy industry alone achieved an estimated 1.02 million jobs by the end of 2023.
The report, developed in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), highlights the impressive growth of the global renewable energy workforce, which surged from 13.7 million in 2022 to 16.2 million in 2023, largely due to India’s contributions. This trend underscores the country’s pivotal role in the global shift toward sustainable energy solutions.
Within India, hydropower emerged as the most significant source of employment in the renewable energy sector, generating approximately 453,000 jobs. This accounted for around 20% of the global total in this sector, positioning India as a key player in the renewable energy landscape, second only to China. The findings reflect the increasing reliance on hydropower as a sustainable energy source, highlighting its potential for job creation.
Additionally, the solar photovoltaic (PV) sector in India has proven to be a vital contributor to employment, with around 318,600 individuals engaged in both on-grid and off-grid solar systems. The growth of this sector is indicative of India’s commitment to harnessing solar energy, which plays a critical role in the country’s renewable energy strategy.
Moreover, the Indian wind energy sector provided jobs for approximately 52,200 people in 2023, showcasing the diverse opportunities available within the renewable energy domain. To support job creation in this sector, the study evaluates the public and private sector policies that influence renewable energy deployment, industrial growth, skill development, and labor market initiatives.
