CEID Consultants and Engineering Pvt Ltd has marked a major breakthrough in the country’s green energy sector by commissioning India’s first compressed biogas (CBG) plant integrated directly into a City Gas Distribution (CGD) network via a steel pipeline. The project, located in Batala, Gurdaspur, Punjab, represents a shift in the way CBG is transported and delivered, moving away from traditional cascade systems toward a more streamlined and cost-efficient pipeline model.
Developed in collaboration with MEPL Bio-energy and connected to the CGD network of Gujarat Gas Ltd., the plant now enables direct supply of CBG through steel pipelines. This advancement eliminates the need for transportation using gas cylinders, significantly reducing logistical complexity, operational costs, and safety risks, while ensuring a reliable and continuous supply to end users.
Initially, the plant began supplying gas using MDPE pipelines, but the successful switch to steel has set a precedent for the future of CBG infrastructure across the country. MEPL’s future projects will follow the technical framework and standards established by this model, paving the way for uniformity in pipeline design, safety protocols, metering, and pressure regulation.
The facility supports a broad consumer base by delivering clean energy in the form of piped natural gas (PNG) to residential, industrial, and commercial users. Additionally, it supplies CNG directly to fueling stations across the region through the CGD grid, enhancing last-mile connectivity and lowering carbon emissions.
Prince Gandhi, Founder and CEO of CEID Consultants, stated, “This integration marks a shift in how India can scale biogas supply with greater efficiency and safety. By injecting CBG directly into the CGD network, we not only simplify operations but also align with the national vision of a gas-based economy.”
This pioneering model supports the SATAT initiative by the Government of India, aimed at expanding CBG adoption for clean mobility and urban energy needs. The initiative also strengthens Gujarat Gas Ltd.’s commitment to sustainability and complements state and national green energy goals.
