The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy and Power has outlined comprehensive steps to promote the production of new and renewable energy from bioenergy sources, including farm stubble. The initiatives are not only geared towards enhancing the country’s renewable energy capacity but also addressing agricultural waste management, particularly in states like Punjab.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has rolled out the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP), a transformative initiative launched in November 2022. With a substantial budgetary allocation of Rs. 1715 Crore for the period from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2026, the program is set to be implemented in two phases. The first phase, with a budget outlay of Rs. 858 Crore, supports the establishment of bioenergy plants by providing Central Financial Assistance (CFA). Project developers, including those in Punjab, can set up bioenergy projects across the country under the Biomass Programme and Waste To Energy Programme components of NBP, receiving CFA as per the scheme guidelines.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas launched the “Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT)” initiative on October 1, 2018. This forward-looking initiative aims to create an ecosystem for producing Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) from various waste and biomass sources. The initiative not only focuses on production but also encourages the use of CBG along with natural gas, contributing to cleaner and sustainable transportation solutions.
The GOBARDHAN, implemented by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, further accentuates the multi-faceted approach, offering financial assistance for setting up model community biogas plants. This not only contributes to renewable energy goals but also provides local communities with a tangible solution for waste management.
As India actively raises awareness and promotes the utilization of farm stubble in bioenergy projects, particularly in key states like Punjab, the government’s vision for a greener tomorrow gains momentum. The collaboration between various ministries, including Power, Environment, and Jal Shakti, showcases a united front in driving India’s bioenergy revolution.
These collective efforts, backed by robust financial support and strategic awareness programs, signal a transformative shift towards sustainable practices. India’s strides in bioenergy production exemplify its commitment to combat climate change, foster innovation, and secure a cleaner, more resilient future for generations to come.
