India Resurgence Fund (IndiaRF), an India-focused investment platform promoted by Piramal Finance and Bain Capital, has acquired a majority stake in Fine Edge Engineering Private Limited, which houses the iron casting and machining business of Ashok Iron Works and its related entities. Founded in 1974, Ashok Iron Works is a Belagavi, Karnataka-based manufacturer of machined iron castings serving the industrial engines, farm equipment and automotive sectors. The company operates four foundries with a combined capacity of 1,44,000 metric tonnes per annum and seven machine shops with capacity to manufacture about six lakh parts annually.

The company produces engine blocks, engine heads and transmission housings ranging from 20 kg to 5,000 kg. It is among the few Indian manufacturers capable of producing machined engine blocks across configurations ranging from one-cylinder to 18-cylinder engines.

Ashok Iron Works has built long-standing relationships with leading domestic and international original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and serves as a single-source or dual-source supplier across several product categories. Its integrated casting and machining operations allow it to support customers through product development, manufacturing and capacity expansion.

IndiaRF plans to support the company’s next phase of growth through investments in manufacturing capacity, research and development, new product development and operational improvements. The investment platform also sees opportunities for the business to benefit from rising demand for high-horsepower engines, including applications linked to the expansion of global data centre infrastructure.

Shantanu Nalavadi, Managing Director, IndiaRF, said the fund sees significant growth potential in the company and plans to strengthen its capabilities and scale through targeted investments. He added that the company’s established customer relationships and manufacturing capabilities provide a strong base for future expansion.

Jayant Humbarwadi, Joint Managing Director, Ashok Iron Works Group, said the company has built a strong position in the iron casting and machining industry through customer relationships, research and development capabilities and a focus on changing market requirements. He said the partnership with IndiaRF would support the company’s next phase of growth.

The transaction provides IndiaRF with a platform to participate in India’s growing industrial and manufacturing opportunity while supporting the expansion of an established engineering business. Investec acted as exclusive sell-side advisor to Ashok Iron Works Group and its shareholders.

IndiaRF is promoted by Piramal Finance and Bain Capital and invests primarily in control situations, with a focus on providing capital solutions and supporting operational transformation. Its investment themes include consumption, infrastructure and India’s industrial and manufacturing sectors.

With its integrated manufacturing base, established OEM relationships and capabilities in large-format iron castings, Ashok Iron Works is positioned to expand its presence across industrial and automotive applications as demand for specialised engine components grows.
