The Defence Ministry has finalized a contract with Goa-based EPC contractor Chowgule and Company for the procurement of six hovercrafts for the Indian Coast Guard, totaling ₹387.44 crore. This marks the first instance of hovercrafts being manufactured in India, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and representing a significant advancement in the nation’s maritime capabilities.
According to a release from the Ministry of Defence, this project is anticipated to bolster the technical expertise of the domestic MSME sector involved in the maritime industry. Hovercrafts, also known as Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs), are designed to have their weight supported primarily by a continuously generated cushion of air.
These hovercrafts will enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s maritime security operations, enabling various functions such as high-speed coastal patrolling, reconnaissance, search and rescue missions, and providing assistance to distressed vessels.
Additionally, the Indian Coast Guard has plans to acquire 12 Heavy Duty Air Cushion Vehicles (HDACVs) for amphibious coastal patrolling and other related operations. Recently, the Coast Guard deployed hovercrafts for surveillance along the maritime boundary with Bangladesh to prevent illegal entry into India following unrest after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s removal.
