In a significant development aimed at enhancing India’s maritime capabilities, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has collaborated with Hindalco Industries, a leading industry group, for the manufacturing and supply of indigenous marine-grade aluminum. This strategic partnership aims to provide indigenous aluminum to both public and private shipyards across the country for the construction of ships, as announced by the Ministry of Defence on Friday.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Indian Coast Guard and Hindalco Industries was formalized in New Delhi on Thursday, signifying a milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its maritime infrastructure and boost coastal security.
According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the MoU outlines the framework for the manufacturing and supply of indigenous marine-grade aluminum to Indian shipyards. It also includes provisions for benefits such as quarterly pricing, priority in supplies, and turnover discounts, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between the two entities.
“The collaboration between the Indian Coast Guard and Hindalco Industries marks a significant step towards bolstering India’s maritime capabilities and ensuring the construction of ships with indigenous materials,” the statement highlighted.
Currently, the Indian Coast Guard operates a fleet of 67 ships equipped with aluminum hulls, enabling operations in shallow waters. To further enhance coastal security, the ICG has planned to induct additional vessels with aluminum hulls, utilizing the indigenously manufactured marine-grade aluminum supplied under this partnership.
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from both the Indian Coast Guard and Hindalco Industries, underscoring the commitment of both parties towards strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure and advancing its strategic interests in the maritime domain.
As India continues to prioritize its maritime security and bolster its naval capabilities, partnerships such as this one between the Indian Coast Guard and Hindalco Industries play a crucial role in fostering indigenous manufacturing and ensuring self-reliance in critical sectors related to maritime defense and infrastructure.
