India and the United States have bolstered their bilateral collaboration in the energy sector, particularly focusing on modernizing the grid, advancing energy storage solutions, and expanding manufacturing capabilities. In a recent meeting, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal met with a US delegation led by John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy, to explore key areas of joint cooperation.
Manohar Lal underscored the significance of the enduring partnership between India and the United States, reaffirming the Ministry of Power‘s dedication to the ‘Power & Energy Efficiency Pillar’ under the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP). He emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts to meet energy transition objectives.
John Podesta acknowledged India’s vital role as a strategic partner and underscored the importance of creating resilient supply chains and fostering a partnership driven by investment. He pointed out the potential for India and the United States to work together on clean energy initiatives, energy storage systems, and enhancing energy efficiency.
He also highlighted the possibility of the US supporting India’s efforts to strengthen its manufacturing capacity. The discussions delved into the modernization of grid and transmission systems, including technical exchanges aimed at upgrading grid transmission to accommodate future load growth. Policy consultations and potential financial backing for these initiatives were also on the agenda.
A significant focus was placed on enhancing India’s manufacturing capacity in critical sectors such as large transformers, with both sides exploring strategies to reduce reliance on imports. The talks also addressed state-to-state collaborations on long-duration energy storage studies and the development of grid-scale battery storage solutions.
The meeting underscored the vital and strategic importance of the India-US partnership in driving forward the global clean energy transition. Both nations expressed a strong and unwavering commitment to deepening their collaborative efforts across these critical areas, recognizing that their joint endeavors will play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable energy future.
