Global networking giant Cisco has highlighted India’s growing importance in its global operations, calling it a strong base for exports and a key player in its long-term growth plans. Chair and CEO Chuck Robbins stated that the company’s manufacturing initiatives in India are progressing faster than expected, reinforcing the country’s viability as a global supply hub.
“We’ve been in India for three decades and began manufacturing here two years ago. Looking ahead, this is one of the few places where we anticipate significant growth in the coming 5–10 years,” Mr Robbins noted during a media interaction. However, he also pointed to global trade uncertainties and tariff issues as factors holding back major investment decisions. “Businesses are hesitant to commit $20–30 million without policy clarity. We’re engaging closely with global policymakers, including the White House, to navigate this uncertainty,” he added.
Despite these hurdles, Robbins said broader investment strategies remain unaffected. Cisco is continuing to invest in its India operations, particularly in areas that align with digital infrastructure and emerging technologies.
A major focus area for Cisco in India is the data centre segment. The company aims to strengthen its presence across traditional enterprise infrastructure, third-party data-hosting providers, and emerging setups tailored for artificial intelligence. “AI-led data infrastructure is a fast-growing segment, and Cisco is preparing to capture value in this space,” said Daisy Chittilapilly, President, Cisco India & SAARC.
Regarding BharatNet, Cisco revealed that it is responsible for nearly 70% of the network’s deployment. The same routers used in BharatNet are manufactured in India and exported globally, linking Cisco’s local production capabilities to its broader sustainability and export goals.
Looking forward, Cisco is expanding into areas such as AI security, mesh firewalls, and zero-trust networking. As India continues to build its digital backbone and AI infrastructure, Cisco expects the country to play an increasingly central role in both its global security strategy and future technology offerings.
