Indexel Engineering, a Rajasthan-based EPC company with deep roots in energy infrastructure, has signed an agreement with U.S. battery developer Unigrid to supply 50 megawatt-hours of sodium-ion battery systems for deployment across India. The battery systems, designed and manufactured by Unigrid, will be rolled out in key industrial zones, renewable energy projects, and microgrid setups. Initial installations are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025, with deployments focused in western states including Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

Anushka Singhal, who heads the energy division at Indexel, stated, “Unigrid brings technology that is both reliable and well-suited for India’s environmental conditions. Sodium-ion batteries provide a safer and more affordable alternative to lithium-based storage.”

Sodium-ion technology is seen as a promising option for grid-scale storage. These batteries are non-flammable, function effectively in a wide range of temperatures—from -40°C to 60°C—and are made using materials that are both abundant and accessible. This makes them a strong fit for India’s energy transition, especially in areas with high temperatures and challenging conditions.

Darren H S Tan, co-founder and CEO of Unigrid, said, “India represents a fast-moving and forward-looking energy market. We see strong potential for our sodium-ion battery systems to play a key role in the country’s ongoing shift toward clean and resilient energy infrastructure. Our collaboration with Indexel Engineering gives us a reliable partner on the ground.”
