Six innovative green hydrogen projects from leading Indian academic institutions have been chosen for incubation under the IIT Bombay and HSBC India Green Hydrogen Program. The IIT Bombay and HSBC India Green Hydrogen Program aims to drive innovation in green hydrogen technologies by fostering the development and deployment of advanced solutions.

The initiative attracted numerous project proposals from six IITs, the National Institute of Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), showcasing the creativity of researchers, scientists, and students across India. Following a rigorous evaluation by a steering committee comprising industry leaders and senior IIT Bombay faculty, six projects were selected for incubation.

These projects address key challenges in hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and usage. Notable innovations include indigenous hydrogen storage systems designed to cut carbon emissions from commercial vehicles, cost-effective hydrogen generators, and alternative burners aimed at improving urban air quality.

The selected solutions will be incubated at IIT Bombay’s incubation center, where they will be nurtured, refined, and prepared for commercial readiness. The program also provides comprehensive support to scale these technologies and broaden their impact.

“We are excited to collaborate with IIT Bombay in advancing these groundbreaking innovations, making green hydrogen more sustainable, affordable, and scalable,” said Hitendra Dave, CEO of HSBC India.

Launched in 2023 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the three-year program aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which envisions a robust green hydrogen economy to achieve energy independence and global sustainability goals. The mission aims to establish a production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes per year by 2030, positioning green hydrogen as a cornerstone of the nation’s energy future. “This partnership reflects our strong commitment to advancing the Indian government’s visionary mission and driving sustainable energy innovation,” said Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay.
