BioReform, a sustainability-focused startup incubated at the Atal Incubation Centre, IIIT Hyderabad (AIC-IIITH), has earned international recognition for its work in developing biodegradable alternatives to single-use plastic. Founded by young entrepreneur Mohammed Azhar Mohiuddin, the company is gaining attention for combining innovation, environmental impact and rapid business growth.

BioReform was part of AIC-IIITH’s 2024 accelerator cohort, an eight-month programme that provided mentorship, funding support and business guidance. Backed by the EPAM Social Impact Innovation Program, the startup received milestone-based seed funding to advance its product development and market expansion. The incubation ecosystem at IIIT Hyderabad, including its research centres, product labs and collaborative workspaces, played a key role in shaping the company’s early trajectory.

The idea for BioReform emerged in 2021, when Azhar began exploring solutions to the global plastic crisis. Recognising the limitations of conventional alternatives such as paper and cloth, he developed a proprietary formulation using corn starch and multiple biopolymers. The resulting material decomposes within approximately 180 days, offering a practical and scalable replacement for plastic packaging.

From its initial concept stage, BioReform quickly progressed to manufacturing, establishing its first facility in Hyderabad’s Jeedimetla industrial area. Today, the company operates with an in-house production setup and a growing team, serving more than 300 customers across India and international markets including the Middle East and the United Kingdom.

BioReform’s product range includes compostable carry bags, food-grade packaging, industrial garbage bags and specialized solutions for sectors such as retail, logistics, healthcare and hospitality. Its innovations also extend to niche applications, including biodegradable materials for medical and agricultural use.

The startup has received multiple accolades across global platforms, including recognition at sustainability and innovation programmes in India and abroad. It has also been featured in international initiatives supported by organizations such as the World Bank and UNOPS, contributing to solutions for plastic waste challenges in regions like island economies.

In a significant milestone, BioReform was recently selected among the top five startups in a highly competitive international programme in the United Arab Emirates. The company is currently exploring plans to establish a manufacturing presence in Ras Al Khaimah, marking a major step in its global expansion strategy.

Since its inception, BioReform has replaced more than 15 million single-use plastic bags, reflecting its commitment to measurable environmental impact. As demand for sustainable materials continues to grow, the company aims to further expand its product portfolio and international footprint. With a focus on scalable innovation and real-world application, BioReform represents a new generation of startups driving meaningful change in the global fight against plastic pollution.
