igus has introduced the e-spool microphone, an innovative cable reeling solution designed to ease the workload of sound engineers in theatres, studios, and performance venues. This electrically powered system can automatically guide microphone cables up to 30 meters long from overhead rigging with a simple button press. Its design eliminates the need for slip rings, ensuring optimal sound quality and reliable signal transmission.
Sound engineers often face the challenge of managing numerous cables in high-pressure environments like live concerts and television productions. The e-spool microphone offers a practical solution by automating cable handling, reducing time and effort while protecting cables from wear and tear. Available in both mono and stereo versions, it can operate independently with a wired controller or integrate seamlessly with control systems via Wi-Fi or radio connectivity.
Enhancing Sound Quality with a Slip-Ring-Free Design
Unlike traditional microphone reelers, the e-spool avoids using slip rings, which can disrupt signal transmission and increase system complexity. Instead, it employs a unique twisterband system, where the cable is routed through a series of interlocking plastic links, enabling smooth rotary motion without interruptions. This innovative approach ensures uninterrupted, high-quality audio transmission, allowing sound engineers to deliver superior sound experiences.
Durable and Safe with Advanced Features
The system comes equipped with a specialized XLR cable that incorporates strain relief to prevent damage under load, allowing it to support several times the weight of standard microphones. Additionally, an integrated safety mechanism halts operations in case of unexpected resistance, such as a snagged cable, preventing potential damage and ensuring reliability during critical events.
Michael Berteit, Sales Manager for Engineering Projects at igus, highlights the system’s benefits: “The e-spool microphone not only protects cables but also provides sound engineers with peace of mind, enabling them to focus on creating outstanding audio performances.”
