At India Energy Week 2024, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two technical collaborators on February 7. The agreement aims to establish 19 compressed biogas (CBG) plants. IGL anticipates completing the installation of these CBG plants within the next 12 to 18 months.
Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) is one of the leading natural gas distribution companies operating in India’s National Capital Region (NCR). Established in 1998, it is a joint venture between GAIL (India) Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD).
The compnay is primarily engaged in the distribution of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for use in vehicles and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for domestic, commercial, and industrial purposes. The company has established an extensive network of CNG stations and PNG pipelines, catering to the energy needs of millions of customers in the NCR.
With a strong focus on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, IGL plays a significant role in promoting clean and green fuel alternatives, reducing pollution, and mitigating carbon emissions in the region. Through continuous innovation and investment in infrastructure, it delivers reliable and affordable natural gas solutions while contributing to the nation’s energy security and economic growth.
As the Indian government emphasizes the adoption of alternative energy sources, there’s a notable emphasis on developing biofuel infrastructure. In a bid to bolster the biogas industry, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during the interim budget, pledged financial support for acquiring biomass aggregation equipment.
IGL, in collaboration with partners, aims to generate 0.45 MMSCMD of biogas from waste, equivalent to roughly 5 percent of its daily needs. Spread across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, 19 plants will be established, with two additional partners enlisted for the initiative.
The biogas produced by these facilities will be integrated into IGL’s city gas distribution network, as highlighted in a company statement. Memorandums of Understanding were formalized in the presence of Praveen Mal Khanooja (IA &AS), Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), along with K.K Chatiwal, Managing Director of IGL, Pawan Kumar, Director (Commercial) of IGL, and other senior officials.
