In a key move to enhance India’s sensor products development and manufacturing, the Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA) and India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership aims to support India’s goal of becoming a global leader in Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM).
IESA’s collaboration with ELCIA highlights its commitment to driving innovation, expanding manufacturing capabilities, and advancing technology development in India. The focus of the partnership is to establish a Centre of Excellence (ECoE) dedicated to sensor technologies, addressing the increasing demand for sensor modules in India and reducing dependence on sensor imports. Currently, the Indian sensor module market is valued at Rs 20,000 crore, with projections to grow to Rs 31,000 crore by 2027.
The collaboration seeks to position India as a global leader in sensor manufacturing by leveraging advanced technologies such as analog and digital sensors, Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS), Nano-electromechanical Systems (NEMS), infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), laser sensors, and more. The initial focus of the ECoE-Sensors will be on industrial sensors, with plans to expand into other sectors.

Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, stated, “This partnership with ELCIA is a crucial step in supporting India’s vision of becoming a Product Nation. By focusing on sensor design, manufacturing, and applications, we aim to reduce imports and foster growth within India’s semiconductor and electronics sectors.”
Sriram Kumar V, President of ELCIA, noted, “ELCIA is committed to creating a comprehensive ecosystem that links industry to academia to reduce India’s over-reliance on imported sensors, which currently exceeds 90%. We are excited to collaborate with IESA as part of the E-CoE-S initiative, which will drive innovation and support the Indian industry.”
Dr V Veerappan, Chairman of IESA, emphasized, “This partnership is vital to the growth of India’s sensor manufacturing sector. By combining our strengths, we aim to develop a strong ecosystem that will generate jobs, promote research and development, and ultimately position India as a hub for sensor manufacturing and innovation.” Through this initiative, both IESA and ELCIA are working towards creating a self-reliant future for India’s electronics and sensor industries, transforming the country into a global player in sensor technology.
