International Battery Company (IBC), a US-based battery manufacturing firm, has announced plans to set up a lithium-ion gigafactory in Karnataka. The project involves an initial investment of ₹390 crore and is expected to generate 300 direct jobs.

The facility, established in partnership with Mahanagar Gas Limited, will mark a significant step forward for India’s battery manufacturing sector. IBC currently produces battery cells in South Korea and imports them to India for assembly, but the new facility will enable local cell production. The plant is slated to become operational within the next nine months.

Speaking at the foundation stone-laying event, Minister M.B. Patil noted that the factory, located in the KIADB ITIR industrial area in Devanahalli, will export 20% of its production to the United States and Europe. “This initiative will strengthen the state’s economy and reduce reliance on imports, particularly from China,” he said. The government has allocated 10 acres for the project, strategically positioned near the Foxconn facility. The plant will manufacture and distribute batteries for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and other vehicles both domestically and internationally.

Patil highlighted the importance of this development, stating that it will be India’s first cell manufacturing facility, positioning Karnataka as a global leader in energy technology research. “This gigafactory is a critical step in building a sustainable, technology-driven, and green energy-focused economy,” he said. The project underscores Karnataka’s commitment to fostering innovation and advancing the clean energy transition.

International Battery Company (IBC) is a leading US-based firm specializing in advanced lithium-ion battery technologies. Committed to driving the global transition to clean energy, IBC focuses on developing sustainable, high-performance battery solutions for a wide range of applications, including electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and industrial systems.

The company operates cutting-edge manufacturing facilities in South Korea, where it produces battery cells that are later assembled into complete battery systems for global markets. Expanding its footprint in India, IBC is establishing the country’s first lithium-ion cell manufacturing gigafactory in Karnataka. This initiative aligns with IBC’s mission to localize production, enhance energy security, and reduce dependence on imports while fostering innovation in the energy sector. By combining technological expertise with a vision for sustainability, IBC aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of clean energy solutions.
