The Indian Biogas Association or IBA is anticipating a substantial investment of approximately ₹1,600 crore in the biogas sector during the Renewable Energy India Expo (REI) 2024, which kicks off on Thursday. As the foremost organization representing biogas operators, manufacturers, and plant planners in the country, the IBA is optimistic about the potential opportunities that this prestigious event will offer.

In a statement to PTI, IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We expect to see investment announcements totaling around ₹1,600 crore directed towards the biogas sector during REI 2024.” He further noted that participation at this year’s expo is projected to increase by 20% compared to the previous year, highlighting the growing interest and engagement in the industry.

Kedia underscored the immense untapped potential within the biogas sector. Despite currently contributing less than 1% to the overall energy mix, he believes the sector is on the verge of remarkable growth. He foresees that biogas could play a crucial role in shaping India’s energy landscape by the year 2030.

The association is confident that the REI Expo will catalyze significant momentum for the biogas industry, showcasing its relevance in the broader context of renewable energy advancements. The Bio-Energy Pavilion 2024 has garnered support from various government ministries and notable organizations, including the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the National Institute of Bio-Energy, and the World Bioenergy Association.

This three-day expo will take place at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and is recognized as one of the leading platforms in India for showcasing innovations in renewable energy. The event will present advancements across a range of sectors, including bio-energy, solar power, wind energy, electric vehicles, and energy storage solutions, all aimed at enhancing India’s journey towards achieving its ambitious net-zero emissions target.

AR Shukla, President of the Indian Biogas Association, reflected on the success of last year’s Bioenergy Pavilion, where numerous initiatives were launched, and he expressed optimism for this year’s event. He stated, “We expect to generate considerable interest from investors during this year’s expo.” The event is anticipated to attract over 50,000 attendees, driven by the increasing emphasis on the bio-energy sector and the continued backing from the government.

Over the years, the REI Expo has solidified its position as a premier platform for stakeholders within the renewable energy industry to showcase cutting-edge technologies, innovative products, and comprehensive solutions while facilitating meaningful interactions among industry participants.

India possesses substantial promise for biogas development, with the capacity to produce approximately 62 million tonnes of compressed biogas each year. This production potential is significant, as it could replace nearly 7% of the country’s current fuel consumption. The biogas sector therefore emerges as a vital solution for decreasing dependence on imported fuels while simultaneously addressing pressing environmental challenges.
