Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), India’s second-largest car manufacturer, will soon integrate locally produced AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, developed by Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd., across its product range for the domestic market. These AGM batteries will be used as SLI (Starting, Lighting, and Ignition) batteries, offering enhanced performance and durability.
As per the announcement, AGM batteries provide approximately 150% greater durability than conventional CMF (Complete Maintenance Free) batteries. They are designed to perform in a wider operational temperature range and have a longer lifespan. Hyundai plans to start equipping its models with these advanced batteries in the fourth quarter of FY 2024-2025.
“Hyundai will be the first automotive OEM in India to adopt indigenously developed AGM battery technology, manufactured by Amara Raja,” said Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-Time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer, HMIL.
In line with its commitment to localisation, HMIL collaborates with over 194 vendors to source more than 1,238 components and trim parts for its Chennai facility. The company is also implementing a strategic localisation plan for its upcoming manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, to further strengthen its domestic supply chain. Hyundai Motor India Ltd.
