Hyundai Motor India Ltd is set to become the first Indian automaker to integrate locally produced battery cells into its electric vehicles, following a binding agreement with Exide Energy Solutions Ltd, a subsidiary of Exide Industries Ltd.

The collaboration focuses on the production and supply of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery cells specifically designed for Hyundai’s EVs in the Indian market. This move is aimed at reducing costs, strengthening local supply chains, and supporting India’s transition towards carbon neutrality.

Heui Won Yang, head of Hyundai and Kia’s R&D division, emphasized India’s strategic role in the global electrification drive. He stated, “Our partnership with Exide Energy Solutions Ltd. ensures a competitive edge by equipping future Hyundai and Kia EVs in India with locally manufactured batteries.”

The advanced LFP cells boast over 10,000 charging cycles, significantly exceeding the performance of conventional lithium-ion batteries. This collaboration aligns with Hyundai’s broader strategy to enhance India’s EV ecosystem and localise its manufacturing operations.
