Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicles, built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), have earned top safety ratings in major global crash tests. The Group’s dedicated EV models, including the Genesis GV60, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, and Kia EV9, all received the highest five-star ratings from the Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme), Europe’s premier vehicle safety evaluation program. In the U.S., these models also achieved TSP (Top Safety Pick) or higher ratings in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The recently launched Kia EV3 has yet to be evaluated.
The E-GMP platform, recognized for its modular and standardized design, emphasizes safety, innovative design, and advanced features like a multi-voltage (400/800V) rapid charging system and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. This architecture is integral to Hyundai’s strategy of rolling out 23 full electric vehicles by 2025, with a target of selling over 1 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) globally by then.
Hyundai Motor Group has consistently won World Car of the Year awards for three years running, with the Ioniq 5 in 2022, Ioniq 6 in 2023, and Kia EV9 in 2024, all based on the E-GMP platform introduced in December 2020.
The E-GMP platform is specially designed to cater to the unique requirements of electric vehicles, including enhanced body rigidity through the integration of the battery pack as a structural component. The use of aluminum extrusion in the side sills, along with an eight-point fastening structure between the battery and the car body, ensures superior impact distribution and safety in side collisions. Additionally, the platform features a rear member designed to deform during rear-end collisions, absorbing shock and protecting the battery.
In frontal collisions, a multi-skeletal structure optimizes the distribution of impact energy, further enhancing safety. The E-GMP platform’s innovative design has helped Hyundai Motor Group’s EVs achieve top safety scores in vehicle safety assessments worldwide.
In the latest IIHS crash evaluations, Hyundai Motor Group secured excellent safety performance across its lineup, with 20 models, including both EVs and internal combustion engine vehicles, receiving TSP or higher ratings. This achievement positions Hyundai as a leader in vehicle safety, surpassing other global automakers such as Toyota, which had 14 models rated TSP or higher.
