Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) celebrated its grand opening today, marking a major milestone in the company’s investment in the U.S. This event signifies the completion of Georgia’s largest economic development project, just two and a half years after construction began. HMGMA is Hyundai’s third manufacturing facility in the U.S., joining the existing plants in Alabama and Georgia, operated by Hyundai and Kia, respectively.

Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, stated, “Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America showcases our advanced manufacturing capabilities and our strong investment in partnerships with local communities in Georgia. With a rich legacy of craftsmanship here and a skilled workforce at HMGMA, we are shaping the future of mobility in America, for America.”

The first vehicle, a Hyundai Ioniq 5, rolled off the production line on October 3, 2024, marking a new chapter in the company’s U.S. operations. Production of the Hyundai Ioniq 9, a three-row electric SUV, is also underway at HMGMA, and the plant will begin producing its first Kia model in 2026.

HMGMA is designed to manufacture electric and hybrid vehicles for Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia. The plant is initially capable of producing up to 300,000 vehicles annually. The Hyundai Motor Group’s total investment in Georgia, which includes HMGMA and joint battery ventures with LG Energy Solution and SK On, amounts to $12.6 billion. This is the largest investment in the state’s history and is expected to create 8,500 jobs at HMGMA by 2031. Overall, the Group’s investments in Georgia are expected to generate nearly 40,000 direct and indirect jobs, along with an annual income impact of $4.6 billion, according to the Center for Automotive Research.

As of July 2024, more than $2.5 billion in capital investment has been committed by HMGMA suppliers across 12 counties in Georgia, generating about 6,900 jobs. Hyundai has already invested over $20.5 billion in the U.S. and recently announced a further $21 billion investment between 2025 and 2028. This investment will support an annual production capacity of 1.2 million vehicles in the U.S. The Group plans to increase HMGMA’s production capacity to 500,000 units annually, an expansion of 200,000 units from the original plan. Hyundai’s U.S. production facilities in Alabama and Georgia will also undergo upgrades to support this growth.

Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) marks a major milestone as the company’s first dedicated facility for mass-producing electrified vehicles. Located in Bryan County, Georgia, this cutting-edge plant integrates a highly connected, automated, and adaptable manufacturing system designed to seamlessly link every component of the EV and hybrid ecosystem, all with the aim of delivering exceptional value to customers.
