Hyundai Motor Group has entered into a strategic partnership with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to drive innovation in battery technology and electrification tailored to the Indian market. The collaboration includes IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras, focusing on cutting-edge research to support the nation’s transition to sustainable mobility.
As part of the initiative, Hyundai will establish a Center of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Delhi, backed by financial sponsorship from the company. The CoE will spearhead research and development in advanced battery systems and electrification technologies, aligning with India’s growing emphasis on green mobility solutions.
The formal agreement to create the Hyundai Motor Group-IIT CoE was signed at IIT Delhi, with prominent officials in attendance, including Prof Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi; Dean Sachin C. Patwardhan of IIT Bombay; and Dean Manu Santhanam of IIT Madras. Hyundai Motor Group has committed an investment of approximately USD 7 million over the next five years, beginning in 2025.
The initial phase of research will prioritize battery advancements and electrification technologies, with plans to expand into software development and hydrogen fuel cell innovation in subsequent phases. This partnership is a key step in Hyundai’s efforts to support the development of India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. The initiative will also collaborate with IIT Delhi’s Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), a hub specializing in EV research.
Beyond research, the Hyundai CoE will foster academic-industry synergy through technical exchanges and skill development initiatives. Programs will include expert lectures by Hyundai professionals, collaborative meetings, and international training opportunities in South Korea for IIT students and researchers. These efforts aim to nurture talent and create long-term employment opportunities in India’s evolving EV sector.
