Located in the bustling city of Gurugram, Haryana, EcoGram is a green venture developed by the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF). This facility houses a biogas plant and a material recovery center, designed to ease the pressure of urban waste on landfills and champion a circular economy. Since its launch in October 2022, EcoGram has been turning waste into valuable resources.
In collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), waste is collected from 20 major sources—ranging from residential societies and office buildings to commercial hubs At the core of the waste management process is the systematic sorting of waste into two primary categories: wet and dry.
Once segregated, the waste is transported to the EcoGram facility, a dedicated center for sustainable processing. Here, wet waste undergoes anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, which is then converted into usable electricity. Meanwhile, dry waste is further sorted and directed to authorized recycling units through designated aggregators, ensuring minimal landfill disposal and maximum material recovery.
Since its inception in October 2022, the EcoGram facility has managed and recycled over 11,15,370 kilograms of waste. With a daily capacity to handle 2,000 kilograms of wet waste and 5,000 kilograms of dry waste, the facility plays a vital role in the local circular economy. By diverting waste from landfills, it has successfully prevented more than 1,44,000 kilograms of CO₂ emissions, underscoring its positive environmental impact.
The facility also contributes to renewable energy generation, producing up to 200 kilowatts of electricity daily from biogas. This output not only supports local energy needs but also demonstrates the potential of sustainable waste-to-energy solutions. Through its advanced processing systems, EcoGram serves as a model for urban waste management and green infrastructure.
Beyond operations, EcoGram actively promotes environmental education and community involvement. The site features ‘Earth-Shala,’ an open-air learning space equipped with seating and educational displays designed to raise awareness about sustainability and responsible waste practices. Over 1,087 visitors — including school children, government officials, corporate representatives, and international delegates — have toured the facility, gaining insights into the benefits of eco-conscious living.
This facility reflects Hyundai’s commitment to building cleaner cities and raising awareness about responsible waste management. EcoGram is not just a recycling unit—it’s a step toward a more sustainable future.
