Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has officially announced the establishment of a hydrogen innovation centre during the Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2024 in Chennai. This new facility is the result of a strategic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Guidance Tamil Nadu, and the State Government of Tamil Nadu.
The hydrogen innovation centre aims to drive advancements in hydrogen technology. The virtual groundbreaking ceremony was led by Thiru M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, with officials from Hyundai and IITM in attendance.
Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer of HMIL, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Tamil Nadu’s vision for a sustainable alternative fuels ecosystem. He expressed confidence that the centre will play a key role in promoting hydrogen mobility in the state.
The new facility will be constructed on the IIT Madras Thaiyur campus in Chennai, with HMIL investing significantly in its development. Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IITM, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting the opportunity to work with HMIL and Guidance Tamil Nadu to establish a research hub dedicated to hydrogen mobility. The centre is expected to foster innovation and support a growing ecosystem for start-ups and researchers in the hydrogen technology field.
