Honeywell (Nasdaq: HON) introduced two cutting-edge solutions today designed to enhance electric vehicle (EV) battery safety and improve the manufacturing process for gigafactories. These innovations, developed by Honeywell Process Solutions and Honeywell Sensing Solutions, align with the company’s focus on energy transition and other key global trends.

“As electrification accelerates worldwide, the need for safer, more efficient EV battery production has become critical,” said Victor Verissimo, General Manager of Electrification for Honeywell Industrial Automation. “Our new solutions aim to minimize safety risks, improve battery lifecycle transparency, and enhance manufacturing efficiency, driving progress toward a sustainable future.”

Partnership with Titan Enhances Battery Quality Monitoring

Honeywell Process Solutions has teamed up with Titan Advanced Energy Solutions to integrate Titan’s ultrasound-based battery scanning technology into the Honeywell Battery Manufacturing Excellence Platform (MXP). This collaboration allows for real-time monitoring of battery cell quality during production, detecting defects that traditional methods might miss. This integration supports early-stage gigafactories by improving efficiency and traceability in battery production, enabling large-scale, high-quality output to meet growing electrification demands.

New Sensors to Prevent EV Battery Fires

Honeywell Sensing Solutions also introduced the Battery Safety Electrolyte Sensor (BES), designed to detect the early signs of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries. The BES uses Li-ion Tamer™ electrolyte gas detection technology to identify potential battery failures, issuing warnings up to 20 minutes before a fire could start. This early detection system allows for timely intervention, reducing the risk of fires, saving lives, and preventing property damage, while also helping manufacturers comply with global EV safety regulations.
