Honeywell Launches Advanced Technology Suite to Enhance Green Hydrogen Plant Efficiency

Honeywell

Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) has introduced Honeywell Protonium™, a next-generation suite of solutions designed to improve the performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability of green hydrogen production. The new offering will be first implemented by Aternium, a leading U.S.-based clean hydrogen producer, at its upcoming Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2). This hub is one of seven selected for funding by the U.S. Department of Energy to help advance the country’s clean energy infrastructure.

Honeywell Protonium™ supports the growth of green hydrogen by addressing common challenges such as fluctuating power supply, emissions reduction, and high operational costs. It enhances the effectiveness of electrolysis and streamlines both plant design and day-to-day operations through advanced process automation and system optimization.

Andrew Cottone, CEO and Founder of Aternium, commented: “Our decision to adopt Honeywell Protonium™ for our Mid-Atlantic projects reflects our commitment to operating with best-in-class efficiency and safety. Honeywell’s strong track record in industrial innovation will play a key role in helping us deliver clean hydrogen reliably and responsibly, while creating lasting value for our stakeholders.”

Pramesh Maheshwari, President of Honeywell Process Solutions, added: “By improving the way hydrogen plants are designed and run, Honeywell is helping to bring green hydrogen closer to widespread commercial use. As this energy source gains momentum, it’s essential for producers to embrace automation and smart operations to support the transition to cleaner energy.”

The Honeywell Protonium™ suite is built around three key solutions aimed at maximizing the performance and cost-effectiveness of green hydrogen production. The Concept Design Optimizer focuses on early-stage project planning, enabling developers to make faster, informed investment decisions while reducing the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). This tool helps streamline the design process, offering a clear path to financially and operationally efficient hydrogen facilities.

Complementing this are the Hydrogen Electrolyser Control System and the Hydrogen Unified Control and Optimizer. The control system actively monitors and adjusts electrolyser performance to enhance efficiency and extend equipment life. Meanwhile, the unified control solution manages energy distribution and plant operations holistically, boosting overall productivity and lowering operating costs through the use of real-time data and digital modeling techniques. Together, these offerings provide a comprehensive approach to optimizing green hydrogen infrastructure. Available globally, Honeywell Protonium™ aims to help clean hydrogen producers lower emissions, drive down costs, and move toward long-term sustainability goals.
