Honeywell and Verizon Business have teamed up to integrate Verizon 5G connectivity into Honeywell’s smart meters, enabling utilities and consumers to remotely access crucial data, optimize energy use, and streamline operations to relieve pressure on the energy grid. The collaboration will provide utility companies with secure and reliable cellular network connections to transmit information about energy consumption, grid conditions, and equipment performance. This data can then be integrated into management platforms like Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities, offering better operational insights, accurate energy demand forecasts, and improvements to grid reliability and resilience.

“As demand for energy management grows, secure, reliable connectivity in smart meters simplifies monitoring of energy use and utility equipment performance. This helps reduce waste, alleviate strain on grids, and cut time and costs in managing utilities,” said TJ Fox, Senior VP of Industrial IoT and Automotive at Verizon Business. “Connected capabilities are essential to managing evolving energy demands and minimizing outages or unplanned maintenance.”

“By utilizing AI, cloud technology, and 5G, we are transforming how utilities manage energy distribution by providing real-time connectivity,” said AmolMotivala, President of Honeywell Smart Energy. “Verizon’s 5G network is enabling us to revolutionize the utility sector with smart meters that offer valuable insights, boosting grid performance and improving customer satisfaction.”

John Marcus, Senior Principal Analyst at GlobalData, emphasized the importance of cellular-connected intelligence for utilities, noting its effectiveness in monitoring the grid for operational efficiency, health, and overall performance. “As energy management technologies grow, cellular connectivity provides the security and reliability necessary to help optimize grid performance and manage resources more intelligently.”

Verizon-connected Honeywell smart meters also offer the ability to remotely upgrade and add new functionalities, extending the life of the investment and reducing the need for technician visits. This remote connectivity will lead to fewer service interruptions and improved reliability. Additionally, Verizon’s ThingSpaceIoT management platform provides customers with visibility into the health and performance of all their IoT devices, including the smart meters, on a single dashboard.
