Honeywell has announced a collaboration with Beijing Hinergy Qingyuan Technology Co., Ltd. (“Hinergy”) to implement Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology in a new plastic recycling facility in Shandong Province, China. This facility will utilize the advanced technology to convert 30,000 tons of mixed waste plastics annually into recycled polymer feedstock (RPF), a move aimed at boosting plastic recycling efforts in the country.
The partnership highlights Honeywell’s commitment to the energy transition, one of the key global trends shaping its business strategy. The UpCycle Process Technology is designed to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based virgin plastics by increasing the range of plastics that can be recycled, including complex materials like colored, flexible, multilayered packaging, and polystyrene. When combined with other recycling methods and improvements in waste collection, UpCycle has the potential to recycle nearly 90% of plastic waste.
Chen Donglin, Chairman of Hinergy, expressed confidence in the future of plastic waste recycling, citing the growing global emphasis on carbon reduction and China’s support for the circular economy. He noted that Hinergy’s collaboration with Honeywell will play a crucial role in establishing the company’s first waste plastic recycling facility, contributing to China’s broader goals for sustainable development.
William Yu, President of Honeywell China, emphasized that the UpCycle Process Technology will help close the loop in the plastics supply chain while reducing the carbon footprint. The collaboration with Hinergy is seen as a significant step toward addressing the challenges of traditional plastic recycling and advancing China’s sustainability objectives.
Honeywell will not only supply the UpCycle Process Technology for the new facility but also provide start-up engineering and ongoing technical support to ensure the plant operates efficiently throughout its lifecycle. The project is part of Honeywell’s broader commitment to developing products that enhance environmental and social outcomes, with about 60% of its R&D investment focused on these areas.
Hinergy, established in 2012, is a national high-tech enterprise based in Beijing with a strong focus on energy-saving technology, smart manufacturing, and carbon reduction. The company integrates cutting-edge technologies from global research centers and universities to drive innovation in the building materials industry and beyond.
