Honda Motor Company announced plans to establish a dedicated electric motorcycle production facility in India by 2028. This plant will manufacture a range of electric two-wheelers using interchangeable modules across multiple models, although the company has yet to disclose the location or investment details.
Minoru Kato, Executive Officer and Chief Officer of Honda’s Motorcycle and Power Products Operations, stated that the company aims to price its electric motorcycles to ensure that the total cost of ownership over three years is comparable to traditional internal combustion engine models. The new facility is expected to produce at least eight different electric motorcycle and scooter models.
Honda is also collaborating with battery manufacturers to develop specifications tailored to motorcycles, ensuring a stable supply of this critical component.
The electric two-wheeler market in India has been growing rapidly, driven by government subsidies and new entrants. Honda anticipates strong demand, with about one million electric two-wheelers expected to be sold in India, which accounts for 5% of the total market.
Globally, Honda expects motorcycle sales to reach 20.2 million units, with 85% of sales coming from Asian markets like India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The company aims to capture nearly 50% of the global market share, including electric vehicles, in the long term.
To support its electric vehicle launch, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) will leverage its vast sales network of 6,000 outlets across India. This will help ensure widespread service and charging infrastructure, addressing concerns around battery range and charging availability.
Honda has committed to launching 30 electric models globally by 2030, aiming to sell 4 million electric motorcycles annually by the same year. In November, Honda unveiled two electric motorcycles for the Indian market: the Activa e:, powered by Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e:, and the QC1, which uses a fixed battery.
With 13 models already launched, Honda is making steady progress toward its 2030 goal. With a commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, HMSI offers a wide variety of models catering to different market segments, including the popular Activa scooter series and Shine motorcycle. The company operates multiple manufacturing plants across India, ensuring high production capacity and strong distribution. HMSI also focuses on sustainability, safety, and expanding its presence in both urban and rural markets.
