Hirect Limited (formerly Hind Rectifiers Limited) has secured its first development order for Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trainsets, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion into next-generation railway systems. The order, valued at approximately ₹60 crore, has been awarded by the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) and strengthens Hirect’s position as a provider of integrated propulsion solutions for modern rolling stock.
The project involves the design, development, manufacture and supply of complete propulsion systems for four MEMU trainsets. The scope includes traction transformers, traction motors, integrated propulsion systems and the Train Control and Management System (TCMS). The order is scheduled to be completed over the next 24 months.
This contract marks Hirect’s entry into the fast-growing trainset segment, expanding its presence beyond traditional locomotive applications. It also represents an important technology qualification programme that will allow the company to demonstrate the performance, reliability and operational efficiency of its indigenously developed propulsion systems on one of Indian Railways’ modern train platforms.
Successful execution of the project is expected to strengthen Hirect’s credentials for future opportunities in large-scale trainset programmes as Indian Railways continues to modernise its passenger transportation network. The project also reflects the company’s growing capabilities in delivering complete system-level solutions for advanced railway applications.
The order highlights the strength of Hirect’s in-house engineering and research capabilities. Over the years, the company has invested significantly in developing integrated propulsion technologies, enabling it to move beyond manufacturing individual railway components to offering complete propulsion systems for modern electric trainsets. This strategic shift supports India’s focus on expanding indigenous manufacturing under its railway modernisation programme.
Commenting on the development, Suramya Nevatia, Chairman and Managing Director, Hirect Limited, said, “This order represents much more than a business opportunity. It validates the technology roadmap we have pursued through sustained investment in research and development. Our entry into the MEMU trainset segment demonstrates our capability to deliver complete integrated propulsion solutions for modern railway systems. As Indian Railways accelerates the adoption of advanced trainsets and next-generation mobility solutions, we believe Hirect is well positioned to contribute to this transformation with reliable and indigenous technologies.”
The company continues to strengthen its portfolio by developing advanced products that meet the evolving requirements of the railway sector. Its focus on innovation, engineering excellence and local product development is enabling Hirect to address the growing demand for efficient, reliable and high-performance railway technologies.
Established in 1958 in partnership with Westinghouse Brake & Signal, UK, Hirect has evolved into one of India’s leading engineering and manufacturing companies. The company operates manufacturing facilities at Nashik and Bhandup, supported by a workforce of around 950 employees.
