Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, wrapped up a 3-day Intra-Zonal Mine Rescue Competition at its Rajpura Dariba Complex. Organized in collaboration with the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), Northwest Zone, the event aimed at enhancing safety practices and fostering knowledge sharing among mining companies.

The competition focused on emergency preparedness and saw participation from 10 teams, including those from Hindustan Copper’s Khetri & Kolihan operations, and Hindustan Zinc’s own men and women rescue teams. Teams engaged in challenging drills and tests, simulating real-life scenarios and following strict safety protocols.

Hindustan Zinc’s Rampura Agucha Men’s team claimed first place, while the Sindesar Khurd Men’s team secured the runner-up position. Exercises included Fresh Air Base drills, underground rescue and recovery operations, theoretical exams, and first aid tests.

Chief Guest Shri R.T. Mandekar, Deputy Director of DGMS, praised the participants and suggested Hindustan Zinc establish dedicated mine rescue stations, a proposal welcomed by the company. He lauded the increasing participation of women’s teams, which supports gender equality in the sector.

Hindustan Zinc CEO Shri Arun Misra reaffirmed the company’s commitment to safety, highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness and strict safety protocols. The competition underscores it’s leadership in safety and gender inclusivity, as evidenced by their all-women mine rescue team, which recently won second place in the women’s taskforce category at the International Mine Rescue Competition in Colombia.

Hindustan Zinc continues to set industry benchmarks for safety, innovation, and sustainability. The company is recognized globally for its ESG practices and has launched Asia’s first low-carbon “green” zinc brand, EcoZen, produced with renewable energy and a reduced carbon footprint. Hindustan Zinc is also a certified water-positive company and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, reflecting its dedication to environmental and social responsibility.
