Hindustan Zinc Plans to Double Metal Output by 2030

Hindustan Zinc, a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group, aims to increase its metal production to two million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030, as announced by Chairperson Priya Agarwal Hebbar. “With the growing demand for steel and infrastructure development in India, Hindustan Zinc is on track to double its production to two MTPA by 2030. Zinc plays a key role in galvanizing steel,” Hebbar said in a letter to shareholders.

Currently, the company’s metal production stands at 1.1 MTPA. Additionally, Hindustan Zinc is expanding into critical minerals and has secured preferred bidder status for several mining blocks across India. The company’s ongoing projects, including its roaster and fertilizer plant, are progressing as planned, reinforcing its growth strategy.

“Our record-breaking production achievements are supported by highly digitalized and automated processes that continue to set industry standards. With innovations like tele-remote operations enabling underground mining from the surface and advanced robotics in metal production, we strive to minimize human intervention across all operations,” Hebbar stated.

Hindustan Zinc has also embraced artificial intelligence, driving improvements in ore extraction, processing, and metal production, which have helped increase productivity. Over the last five years, the company’s metal production has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4%, while silver production has increased by 5%.

For the quarter ending December 31, 2024, Hindustan Zinc reported a 32% rise in consolidated net profit, amounting to ₹2,678 crore, compared to ₹2,028 crore in the same period the previous year. Hindustan Zinc is the second-largest integrated zinc producer and the third-largest silver producer globally.
