On the occasion of Engineers’ Day, Hindustan Zinc Limited is highlighting the growing contribution of young engineers in transforming India’s mining and metals industry. Engineers make up 57.8% of the company’s executive workforce, while 76% of its young professionals come from core engineering disciplines. Nearly 10% of Hindustan Zinc’s leaders are below the age of 35.

The company said its young engineering talent is playing an important role in the adoption of technology across its mines and smelters. Engineers are working on areas such as remote blasting, tele-remote equipment operation, real-time monitoring, digital control rooms, automated processes and operational intelligence systems.

Hindustan Zinc has an executive workforce of 2,685 employees, of which 1,551 come from engineering backgrounds. Women account for 20.5% of the executive workforce and are represented across disciplines including mining, metallurgy, mechanical, electrical and environmental engineering. The company is also strengthening its talent pipeline through campus recruitment. During FY26, Hindustan Zinc hired 335 graduates through campus recruitment, bringing new technical skills and ideas into its operations.

Amarendu Prakash, CEO and Whole-time Director, Hindustan Zinc, said: “The engineering profession is changing rapidly, and young engineers are entering an industry where technology is becoming an important part of everyday operations. At Hindustan Zinc, we encourage our engineers to question existing methods, solve complex problems and develop new approaches. Our focus is to give young talent the opportunity to turn their technical knowledge and ideas into practical solutions for the mining and metals industry.”

More than 62% of Hindustan Zinc’s workforce is below the age of 35, while the company has a gender diversity ratio of 26.3%. The company is also working to create a work environment that encourages employees to take ownership, develop new ideas and contribute to technology-led improvements.

Hindustan Zinc’s engineering ecosystem also includes more than 423 non-executive employees who are directly and indirectly involved in engineering activities across its mines and smelters. Their work includes operating and maintaining heavy machinery, equipment and other systems that support mining and manufacturing operations.

The company has also introduced several initiatives aimed at supporting employee growth and improving workplace flexibility. These include opportunities for women to work across shifts and operational roles, flexible working hours, spouse hiring, year-long childcare sabbaticals and leave policies focused on employee well-being. Hindustan Zinc also promotes internal mobility, allowing employees to explore different roles and functions based on their skills, interests and career goals.
