Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), India’s largest integrated zinc producer and the world’s second largest, is accelerating its sustainability efforts by committing to source over 70% of its total power requirements from renewable energy by 2027. The company is expanding its renewable power capacity from 450 MW to 530 MW to enable round-the-clock green energy supply, contributing significantly to reducing its carbon footprint.
Through its energy efficiency initiatives, Hindustan Zinc saved over 0.8 million Gigajoules (GJ) of energy in FY24, equivalent to powering approximately 70,000 households for a year. Measures such as infrastructure upgrades and transitioning to cleaner fuels like piped natural gas have contributed to a 14% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity since 2020, even as production volumes increased.
Chairperson Priya Agarwal Hebbar emphasized the company’s dual commitment to sustainability and business growth, stating, “We are proud to advance our ESG roadmap by increasing renewable power supply to 530 MW, aligning with our goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. Our initiatives are designed to deliver long-term value while supporting global climate goals.”
Hindustan Zinc’s sustainability-focused projects include turbine upgrades at captive power plants, improved cellhouse efficiencies, and transitioning to low-carbon fuels like piped natural gas. These actions have significantly reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions across its operations.
The company was the first in India’s metals and mining sector to adopt Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) goals aligned with the 1.5°C global warming threshold.
